nasturtium
- c.1150, popular etymology (Pliny) is from L. *nasitortium, lit. "nose-twist," from nasus "nose" + pp. of torquere "to twist," the plant so called for its pungent odor. Earliest reference is to a plant like watercress; modern use first recorded 1704.
